Spurs don’t need to spend with the likes of Dier, Trippier, Alli and Co in the ranks: fans have their say

A FEW early responses to our Tottenham piece earlier about the way forward – transfer and player-wise – for Mauricio Pochettino.

We suggested there was  little need for change in the summer, and it seems that Spurs fans agree…

One of the most sensible comments on any blog I’ve read to date – but that’s probably because I wrote something similar on a Manure blog last week concerning their possible approach for Eric Dier for £40mil.

I don’t think Wimmer should leave/be allowed to go – he is a more than adequate back-up for the left side back three option. If we decide to play a back four he can deputise for Vertoghen and his apparent lack of pace would not be a problem.

I use the word “apparent” because he really hasn’t had a decent run of games for us to judge.

Remember, Sonny when first put into the front line ran like a headless chicken – now he knows how to play the system and understands the Poch ‘philosophy’ and is a revelation.  The same for Janssen who has shown promise in the few games he has played but only now is banging in the goals … well, 2 in 2 so far.

Davies should play more in the role he does for Wales so a defensive roster of Trippier, Walker, Alderweireld, Vertoghen, Davies, Wimmer and Rose allows an “any permutation of 3 or 4” from the 7. Carter-Vickers can back-up for any of the four centre backs. Backup for Rose? Check Walker-Peters and Connor Ogilvie from the Development Squad.

We don’t need to spend vast sums on the defence; in fact – none would be preferable for fear that a new player would take time to absorb the “philosophy” and discipline Poch demands; for evidence of that see Sissoko, Janssen, Soldado, N’Jie, N’Koudou.

I think the most likely candidate to leave will be Wimmer…not mentioned? Trippier is happy and can’t see him going anywhere for the sums being mentioned,

If he was to go on the market you can expect a bidding war. Trippier’s continued improvement is putting himself in a position where he can be genuinely rotated with Walker rather than just acting as backup.

You can’t say that with the same confidence when comparing Davies and Rose although he has recently signed a new contract, I’d like to see him revert to CB in Wimmer’s spot to cover and compete with Jan, a bit more versatility would benefit him, otherwise we have a couple of highly-rated youngsters coming through to cater for in defence. Sell Wimmer and Sisokko bring in Shaw, Keane, Barkley and Dembele to bolster the ranks.

After Saturday’s capitulation, surely even the most deluded Spurs fan can see that they need to buy more quality. Having the best starting 11 does not win you trophies anymore – it is not the 1960s!
