Fulham owner Shahid Khan is believed to have made an offer of around £900m to buy Wembley Stadium from the Football Association, but it simply isn’t clear what this means for the future of our national sport, at the national stadium.
Wembley has long been the legendary home of English international and domestic football, plus a showpiece arena for other sporting events and music concerts.
A potential sale is being positioned as triggering a massive cash injection into grass-roots football, coaching and pitches, but Zapsportz says that could be a red herring and that no decision can be made on a Wembley Stadium sale before there is total clarity on future use.
Khan also owns NFL franchise Jacksonsville Jaguars and the fear is that the stadium would become primarily an NFL venue, if it were to be sold but not enough done to guarantee its continued use for key historic events across the football calendar.
It is widely felt that football already has plenty of money to fund grass-roots facilities better and should not sell off a prized asset when there is no need or defined path ahead.
So if you want a rigorous debate and widespread clarity on what any Wembley Stadium sale would genuinely mean, please sign the petition against the sale.
