Harry Redknapp predicts the Premier League’s elite will carry on spending huge transfer fees, once the coronavirus crisis quietens down.
Redknapp believes the top clubs will react like nothing has happened in the world and that insanity will resume in the grossly-inflated transfer market.
The former Spurs, West Ham and Portsmouth boss believes little will change the attitudes of those clubs eager to pay out £100m or more for the best young talent, despite forecasts that society will alter dramatically in the future.
Redknapp was speaking on ‘The Harry Redknapp Podcast’, newly launched on Patreon, in an exclusive with Harry Harris.
He said: “I remember back when people were saying when the Bosman rule came in that there would never be another big transfer, because players can walk out for free at the end of their contract.
“That didn’t last for long. So in the future, when everything quietens down again, clubs that have players that other teams want – and that’s the asking price – they won’t budge. What will the buying club do then?”
Redknapp is one of the game’s most knowledgeable transfer experts, infamously called upon during transfer deadline days to provide passing insights from his open car window.
Harry is convinced that title challengers won’t hesitate to splash out £100m to £150m to buy the likes of 20-year-old Jadon Sancho.
“It’ll be interesting to see how it pans out and whether clubs will want to invest that type of money again – like £140m on a player – and whether what’s been happening in the world will make a massive difference. However if a Manchester United or a Chelsea want Sancho, they’ll pay the asking price.
“And I’m sure they won’t be put off by players like Coutinho, who cost £140m and who’s not been a success and been loaned out. But Barcelona will have to bite the bullet, because he’s been a disaster when you think of the money they spent on him.”
Redknapp is sure that the spend, spend, spend mentality will continue, as there are so few top-quality players chased by Premier League clubs that are still ready spend hug sums to hunt the big prizes.
