IT doesn’t take a rocket scientist to work out that Jose Mourinho MUST strengthen his squad in the summer. Not exactly a complete overhaul, but certainly the addition of more quality to boost their Premier League title hopes next season.
Fair enough, United have won two trophies already and are in the final of the Europa League in Jose’s first season in charge. But he knows as well as anyone that there’s something missing.
That bit of magic provided by Zlatan Ibrahimovic for the first two thirds of the season before injury struck, and sporadically by Paul Pogba who is yet to fully justify his massive price tag.
Zapsportz understands that United have already agreed a deal to sign Real Madrid striker James Rodriguez for £65 million in the summer – and now we hear that they are ready to step up their bid to bring Gareth Bale back to the Premier League.
According to various newspaper reports emanating from Spain today, United are preparing a £128million double swoop on the Bernabeu. That would price Bale at £63m. Think it will take a lot more than that to seal the deal.
Rodriguez moving to Old Trafford is realistic – Bale more a flight of fancy. Especially if United do not win the Europa Cup and fail to secure Champions League football next season – a scenario that would cost them in the region of £50m.
Spanish newspaper AS claims Colombia star Rodriguez also has the option of a move to Chelsea – where money is no object – but the clever dosh is on United, with Real already agreeing to sell at the end of the season.
However, the Independent, believes Rodriguez is also attracting the interest of Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola who, like Mourinho, needs to revamp his under-achieving squad for next season.
All will become much clearer after United take on Ajax in the Europa League Final in Stockholm on May 24. Then the bun fight shall begin. The stakes could not be higher – let’s hope the current United mob can handle the pressure.
