TALK about following in father’s footsteps! It appears Kasper Schmeichel’s ‘inevitable’ transfer to Manchester United is moving ever closer.
Dad Peter is an Old Trafford legend, of course, so son Kasper has some big gloves to fill.
But he has proved as a Premier League winner he is capable of handling the big occasion; the big stage. None bigger than this.
Peter would be as proud as punch if his son, made out of the same mould when it comes to goalkeeping, took on the role as United’s No.1. It’s written in the stars.
Jose Mourinho seems resigned to losing David de Gea to Real Madrid, as we have predicted for some months, and Schmeichel junior would be a fitting replacement.
Much depends on whether Leicester can find a keeper to come in and follow in the young Schmeichel’s footsteps. He has been an absolute revelation.
A move to United would be perfect for Kasper who has been one of the best keepers in the Premier for the last two seasons.
Who does this remind you of?
Playing for one of the biggest clubs in the world – following in father’s footsteps – would not faze him. He is cool as a cucumber.
And unlike De Gea, who is fantastic by the way, they would be signing a player totally committed to the cause – not with a portion of his mind elsewhere.
If Leicester manage to land giant Croatia keeper Lovre Kalinic, they will grant Kasper his wish of signing for Manchester United. Or at least talking to them.
It seems a no-brainer to me. Schmeichel wants to play for the Red Devils; De Gea wants to play for Real Madrid.
Let it happen; best for all concerned. At least it will get the transfer ball rolling as Mourinho becomes increasingly frustrated by the lack of activity in the market.
United have been linked with Joe Hart but that isn’t going to happen. Neither is a suggested move for Gareth Bale. So we believe.
