MANCHESTER United are searching for an elite striker to transform them into title contenders – and Glenn Hoddle suggests they should go for Gonzalo Higuain or Edison Cavani (pictured).
Zapsportz.com columnist Hoddle priorities “a world-class striker” as he assesses what manager Louis van Gaa needs as he prepares to launch Manchester United’s summer spending spree.
Hoddle got to know Van Gaal when, as one of the ITV pundits during the World Cup, the TV team stayed in the same hotel at the Dutch.
‘Van Persie is looking as though he might struggle next season and Radamel Falcao has failed to adapt to the Premier League’
Writing in his Mail on Sunday column today Hoddle makes the point, though, that it is “easier said than done” to find the right goalscorer. Van Gaal would no doubt like Harry Kane, or Cristiano Ronaldo, or Gareth Bale – or even Lionel Messi. Getting them, irrespective of limitless funds to throw at it, is still much of a long shot.
Hoddle says: “The best strikers in the world are tied down to long-term deals at Barcelona, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain.
“Memphis Depay has come in as a wide player but they clearly need some attacking players in that central role, with Robin van Persie looking as though he might struggle next season and Radamel Falcao having failed to adapt to the Premier League.
“Harry Kane has been mentioned but Daniel Levy will be extremely reluctant to let him go. Alvaro Morata looks a lovely player but is on a long-term deal at Juventus. Paulo Dybala looks like he’s also going to Juventus…. Edinson Cavani or Gonzalo Higuain might be available.”
It’s a thought, although PSG star Cavani has been heavily linked with Juventus in recent days while Higuain, at Napoli, is supposedly on the wanted list of both Arsenal and Atletico Madrid. As Glenn says…”easier said then done”!
