MANCHESTER United boss Louis van Gaal hailed his side’s rise to the top of the Premier League after the weekend win against Sunderland.
Van Gaal admitted Memphis’s goal only seconds from the break changed his half time team talk and gave his side a boost as they went into the interval.
With Manchester City opening the door for their deadly rivals with their crushing defeat at White Hart Lane, this was an opportunity United were never going to pass up.
Mind you, there were a few nervy moments in the opening 40-odd minutes before Memphis put a whole new perspective on a game which was to end in a relatively comfortable 3-0.
With Wayne Rooney getting his first Premier League goal and the impressive Juan Mata wrapping things up at the death, it was the ideal end to a perfect day.
Not that Louis was getting too carried away and, as for the prospect of winning the title, urged quizzical journos to ask him the same question in May when he will give them a more decisive answer.
For now he was just happy to savour being top dogs before switching attention immediately to Wednesday night’s visit of Wolfsburg in the Champions League.
