FAR be it from us to say…we told you so – but earlier in the year Zapsportz did predict that Benfica defender Victor Lindelof WOULD become a Manchester United player.
We reported at the time that the influence of Zlatan Ibrahimovic would prevail. He convinced his Swedish pal that Old Trafford was the place to be.
He would have joined in January but for Benfica’s involvement in the Champions League and the fact they were on course for a league and cup double.
Zlatan will not be around to share his United adventure after the club declined the opportunity to extend his contract following injury.
United confirmed today that they had completed the signing of Lindelof from the Portuguese giants for a whopping £31million.
That makes the Swede the most expensive defender United have ever bought – a couple of million more than they paid for Rio Ferdinand in 2002.
If he proves to be as good and as successful as Rio, it will be money well spent.
The 22-year-old Sweden international was in Manchester on Wednesday to discuss terms and have a medical. Done deal.
Lindelof, who has won 12 caps for his country is ‘thrilled’ to have signed a four-year contract with the Manchester club – with the option of another year.
As quoted on the BBC Sport website – http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/40236474 – Lindelof said: “I have enjoyed my time at Benfica enormously and I have learned a lot there.
“But I’m looking forward to playing in the Premier League at Old Trafford and for Jose Mourinho. I’m keen to get started and make my contribution to the team’s efforts to win more trophies.”
Mourinho said: “Victor is a very talented young player, who has a great future ahead of him at United.”
