REPORTS today suggest Manchester City will be in the market for a new goalkeeper this summer as the pressure grows on under-fire Claudio Bravo. No great surprise there.
All of which surely begs the question – why the hell did Pep Guardiola get rid of Joe Hart in the first place?
As we’ve said here on zapsportz, first and foremost you want your last line of defence to be a stopper not a sweeper.
When is that going to sink in with Pep?
Chile international Bravo, who didn’t have the best of starts to his City career, was beaten by all four shots he faced at Everton on Sunday when City’s Premier League title hopes were dealt a crushing blow in Guardiola’s worst ever defeat as a coach.
It wasn’t all his fault of course and John Stones was also culpable…again. But Bravo has been criticised for his performances since signing from Barcelona for £15.4million in August following Guardiola’s crazy decision to offload Hart.
England keeper Joe must be having a quiet chuckle to himself at his new home in Turin where he is already so highly regarded.
With second-choice keeper Willy Caballero expected to leave when his contract runs out at the end of the season, City must decide whether to sign another understudy for Bravo or bring in a new No 1 ahead of him.
My money would be on Sunderland’s Jordan Pickford. Injured currently but one for the future and he will be England’s No.1 at some point. Sorry Joe!
