IF he doesn’t want to play for the club, take the cash and let him go – Sky pundit Jamie Redknapp had his say on the Philippe Coutinho affair this morning.
The former Liverpool midfielder also pointed out the obvious fact that the Reds will make a massive profit on a player that cost them £8.5million not so long back.
Coutinho’s transfer market value has rocketed to £90million, such is the crazy nature of the game, and Liverpool have to assess their options.
The Brazilian has put in a transfer request now he knows that Barcelona want him to replace £200million man Neymar.
When Barca – or Real Madrid come to that – come calling, it turns a player’s head and the offer is hard to resist.
The agent obviously plays a part and he can smell the wonga. Yes, the same man who negotiated a new contract for his client a few months ago.
But it’s Liverpool who still hold all the cards. Coutinho is their player and he’s under contract for the next five years.
He was happy enough to sign a massively improved contract with Liverpool and it’s not as if he’s playing for a ‘small’ club.
Liverpool are still giants of English and European football and, under Jurgen Klopp, will eventually restore former glories. Ideally, with Coutinho as his talisman.
However, it seems that Barcelona are his preferred choice. Might be the making of him; might be the biggest mistake he has ever made.
It’s quite a coincidence that on the day Coutinho – on the advice of his agent – submitted a transfer request he is was ruled out of Liverpool’s Premier League opener at Watford.
With a back injury, we are led to believe. Maybe something to do with all those plane flights to and from Spain.
