Chelsea are ready to smash the world record transfer with an amount of cash that may never be broken to land Cristiano Ronaldo after being snubbed by their former striker Romelu Lukaku.
The transfer fee to Real Madrid plus the financial package to the player would be a never to be beaten half a BILLION pounds.
Only Roman Abramovich is capable of personally authorising such an audacious swoop.
Abramovich has been deeply offended and hurt by Lukaku saying he did not think twice about agreeing to join Manchester United when the opportunity arose, describing Old Trafford as the ‘biggest club in the world’.
United reached an agreement with Everton to sign the 24-year-old in a deal worth eventually £90 million, which Chelsea would have topped, but the paler opted to sign for Jose Mourinho, even though the manager sent him packing at the Bridge.
The former Chelsea player, who had also been relentlessly chased by the Blues this summer, added of his impending move to United: “I’m really delighted to hopefully be part of their history.
“Who would say no to the biggest club in the world? The best stadium in England, the best fans, it’s the perfect opportunity.
“I always said that I wanted to play for a team that was challenging for every trophy that there is, and I think Manchester United at the minute wants to be that dominant team, that dominant force.”
That has hit at the heart of Abramovich’s desire to make Chelsea into one of the most dominant clubs in world football.
Lukaku scored 87 goals for Everton after moving to Goodison Park in a club-record £28million move from Chelsea in 2014 and has also netted 23 times for Belgium.
He said: “It’s the biggest club in the world. It’s a club that’s hungry to win the league again, to be dominant in the world again. This is the sort of opportunity that I always wanted since I was a child and when they came calling I didn’t have to think twice.”
Ronaldo wants to quit Spain over tax fraud allegations, a decision that has alerted suitors all over the footballing globe, and over the last 24 hours there have been rumours he will stay in Madrid, even if it sonly for one more year.
Antonio Conte has been offered a bumper new contract, but hasn’t signed it, and has been courted by Inter Milan, and will be concerned that Lukaku thinks it’s a far better option to go to United.
Conte has sent Diego Costa a text saying he does not want the tempestuous and sometimes unreliable striker next season, and won’t want to back down, but equally he needs some new strike power.
The fans will be able to accept the loss of Costa if they can capture Ronaldo which would be a global event and immediately install Chelsea as one of the favourites for the Champions League, which at the moment they are not even under consideration as one of the top teams in the competition, and are well behind, Bayern Munch, Barcelona, and of course Real Madrid, as well as PSG and Monaco.
Chelsea will recoup much of their outlay in commercial revenues generated by currently the greatest player on earth, but more importantly by the player with the greatest commercial pulling power.
