WHAT a joy to see Vincent Kompany back to his imperious best in Manchester City’s convincing win at Southampton.
After all his injury and psychological issues this season, the City captain was key to this important victory – even scoring in the process.
David Silva was his usual sublime self and Leroy Sane underlined why he has been nominated for PFA Young Player of the Year.
Sergio Aguero was also too hot for the Saints to handle as City climbed into third place. One point ahead of Liverpool.
They are still seven points shy of second placed Spurs – comfortable victors over Bournemouth – and eleven behind leaders Chelsea.
But this was City at their best; competent in defence with Kompany calling the tune; effective in midfield and devastating in front of goal.
Still not sure about Claudio Bravo in goal though.
This game was all about Kompany though. And BT Sport pundit Steven Gerrard hit the nail on the head in his assessment of the City slicker.
Where would City be now if their captain fantastic has been in the side all season?
Maybe not top- of the tree but a damned sight closer to Chelsea than they are currently.
Guardiola will ring the changes in the summer, but Belgian Kompany has proved he still has plenty left in the tank.
He celebrated his headed goal as if it was his first – and why not?
Sane and Aguero also completed impressive City moves and Guardiola was a happy man in the end.
