THE fact that Arsenal have already put summer transfer plans in place – allegedly – would seem to suggest something far more reaching…
…that Arsene Wenger WILL be staying at the Emirates.
Why else would the club draw up a wish-list of potential new signings if he’s going?
One or two players may well be leaving – Ozil, Oxlade-Chamberlain et al – but Wenger? No.
The Gunners are apparently interested in Everton midfielder Idrissa Gueye who they see as doing a similar job for them as the incomparable N’Golo Kante does for Chelsea.
And so successfully for reigning champions Leicester.
According to some reports, Kante was a prime target for Arsenal in the summer before he opted for a move to the Bridge.
Which raises an interesting quiz question:
How many players have won the league title in England with two different clubs in successive seasons?
Answers on a postcard please. Or a simple email/tweet will do.
Having missed on Kante and with Santi Cazorla missing, Arsenal have been forced to turn their attentions elsewhere.
Which is where Everton’s midfield dynamo Gueye – second only to Kante in terms of tackling and interceptions last season – comes into the equation.
He cost Everton in the region of £7million to lure the Senegal international from Aston Villa. You can treble that – and more – if he moves on again.
Arsenal (or is it Arsene?) are also said to be interested in Celtic star Moussa Dembele but they will face serious competition on that front.
Celtic’s Kieran Tiernay and Valencia’s Jose Gaya have also caught Arsene’s eye. So the Gunners will be splashing out the best part of £100m in the summer.
