ARSENAL are close to completing the signing of Alexandre Lacazette for what will be a club record fee of £45million.

The Lyon striker has been on the Gunners’ radar for some time but Lacazette was waiting to see if Arsene Wenger committed his future to the club.

Lacazette has completed a medical at Arsenal before putting pen to paper on a deal that will surpass the £42.4million Arsenal paid Real Madrid for Mesut Ozil in 2013.

Like Wenger, Ozil looks likely to extend his stay at the Emirates but Lacazette’s pending arrival casts more doubts over the future of Alexis Sanchez.

The Chilean said yesterday that he has made a decision about whether he will stay or go – but refused to say what that decision was.

Wenger is keen to keep Sanchez who would form quite a formidable strike partnership with Lacazette, so paving the way for Olivier Giroud’s departure.

The Gunners had an initial bid for the 26-year-old France international rejected, but came back with an improved offer which has been accepted by Lyon.

Lacazette, the second top scorer in Ligue 1 last season with 28 goals (second only to PSG’s Edinson Cavani), could ultimately cost Arsenal in excess of £50million with add-ons.

He has scored 129 goals in 275 matches in all competitions since breaking into the first team in the 2009-10 campaign.

Arsenal chiefs have promised to bring ‘top quality’ signings to the Emirates – and Lacazette certainly fits the bill.

He has been named in La Ligue team of the year for three of the last four seasons and was top scorer in the French top flight in 2015 when he was also named Player of the Year.

He will provide pace and amazing dribbling ability – as well as goals – and he is also known for his tireless work and strong tackling qualities when not in possession.

Sounds like the full package. Arsenal fans will love him.
